Email Server Protocols
Different protocols are available depending on how you want to access your email. Our support team can help you set up the method you want for your account.
Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP)
IMAP is designed to store all e-mail messages on the server. An IMAP client such as Outlook Express simply accesses the mailbox on the server allowing you to view, manipulate, and send messages from the server. Web-ster's web messaging service is based on the IMAP protocol.
Post Office Protocol (POP3)
POP3 is designed to retrieve e-mail from the mail server. E-mail is downloaded and stored on the local computer and removed permanently from the mail server. POP3 e-mail cannot be viewed from multiple computers. Once the e-mail has been downloaded it is stored on that computer's hard drive.
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)
SMTP is designed to send e-mail in an outbound fashion. SMTP is used in conjunction with POP3. POP3 downloads the e-mail and SMTP sends new mail.
